Terpenes

Why the whole composition matters, not the THC to CBD ratio alone

At the molecular level

Key cannabis terpenes

Six key cannabis terpenes: myrcene, limonene, pinene, caryophyllene, linalool and terpinolene

A representative set of the monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes that shape a cannabis composition.

What are terpenes

While cannabinoids like THC and CBD are the most well-known compounds in cannabis, they are not the only active ones. Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in cannabis and across many other plants, where they serve real biological functions: defense against predators and pathogens, regulation of growth and development, and communication with other organisms.

Terpenes are more than aromatic. They interact with receptors and neurotransmitters, and individual terpenes have been studied for a range of properties, including anti-inflammatory, analgesic and sedative activity. This research sits at the basis of traditional aromatherapy and modern herbal medicine.

In cannabis, terpenes are central to what is known as the entourage effect: the idea that cannabinoids and terpenes act together, so the makeup of the whole composition, not the THC to CBD ratio alone, shapes how a product behaves.

Terpenes are also volatile, and most of their content is lost during oil extraction. That is why a generic cannabis oil contains far fewer terpenes than the flower it was made from, and why its profile differs from the source plant.

Standardized terpene-enriched oils

A composition built to a specification, not an artifact of the process

The conversation about medical cannabis usually begins and ends with THC and CBD. But cannabis contains close to 500 natural compounds, many of them studied for therapeutic potential, so a product is far more than a single THC to CBD ratio.

Bazelet's patented, standardized terpene-enriched oils are formulated to a defined terpene profile, with specific terpenes raised to set concentrations rather than determined by extraction. The result is a composition built to a specification, not an artifact of the production process.

Behind this is more than a decade of work by our scientific division: identifying which terpenes to build into a formulation and which to leave out, for different patient populations and for day or night use. That work draws on data from hundreds of thousands of patients, on preclinical and clinical literature, and on the mechanisms by which cannabinoids and terpenes act at the receptor level.

For a distributor carrying our branded formulations into a new market, that is what matters: a clinically-backed product with a defined composition you can register and stand behind, batch after batch. It gives you a differentiated line to offer, not another commodity oil competing on price.

Advantages

What terpene-enriched oils give a partner

A standardized terpene profile

The terpene profile is set to a defined specification and rebuilt in every batch, instead of being a byproduct of extraction. That gives a predictable composition and the documentation behind it, which is the basis for registering and supplying the product in a regulated market.

A range, not a single product

Because the composition is formulated rather than grown, the branded line spans a range of terpene profiles, including day and night formulations and formulations developed for specific patient populations such as women, seniors and pediatric patients. A partner gets a catalog to build on, not one SKU.

Consistent aroma and finish

A controlled terpene profile also gives a consistent, distinct aroma and finish, a quality marker that supports product acceptance and patient adherence.

Patents and an approved portfolio

Protected IP, with a national-regulator track record

Bazelet's terpene work is protected IP. Since 2016 we have built a portfolio of 60+ patent families, with granted patents across multiple territories, covering both our terpene-enriched formulations and the production methods behind them.

That IP sits behind real depth: more than 84 Bazelet terpene-enriched oils have been approved for marketing by the Israeli Ministry of Health. For a partner, that is a proven formulation library with a national-regulator track record, not a single product on offer.
